Lilongwe, Malawi – 11th July 2025 – The Tanzania High Commission in Malawi commemorated World Kiswahili Language Day with a vibrant celebration at Emmanuel University, featuring cultural displays and engaging speeches. A standout moment occurred when students performed the Malawi National Anthem in Swahili, reflecting the language’s expanding reach.
Tanzanian High Commissioner Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between Malawi and Tanzania, committing to provide Swahili language mentors to assist the university. A representative from Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reinforced this message, applauding the cultural collaboration between the two countries.
Pastor McPherson Jere, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Emmanuel University, revealed intentions to introduce Swahili as a formal academic discipline, potentially positioning the institution as the first in Malawi to offer a degree program in the language. He also suggested student exchange initiatives with Tanzanian universities to enrich educational experiences.
The event, honoring Swahili’s recognition by UNESCO as an international language, wrapped up with attendees savoring Tanzanian cuisine and music. As a gesture of support, the High Commission contributed Swahili learning resources to the university’s language programs.
This celebration underscored Malawi’s increasing adoption of Swahili as both a cultural connector and a field of study, fostering regional unity through language education.
