In a bid to foster inclusive educational practices, a delegation from Emmanuel University recently visited the Hearing Assessment Center at African Bible College (ABC). The primary goal of the visit was to understand how proper hearing evaluation can shape effective teaching and communication strategies for individuals with hearing challenges.

During the interactive session, faculty and students from Emmanuel University learned how to conduct basic hearing assessments to determine a person’s residual hearing capacity. The key takeaway was clear: before deciding whether to teach a learner using sign language or speech reading (lip reading) skills, one must first assess the nature and extent of the hearing loss.

By the end of the visit, participants had gained a practical framework: assess first, then adapt. For learners with usable residual hearing, speech reading and auditory training were recommended.
