LILONGWE – In an era where quality assurance is becoming the cornerstone of both academic and industrial success, a unique opportunity is arising for professionals and educators in Malawi. Emmanuel University is set to host a pivotal seminar titled “Applying Quality Transformative Ethics in Industry and Higher Education” on Wednesday, 22nd April, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The event will feature Dr. Kim Stansfield, a distinguished British Chartered Engineer whose career bridges high-level industry, government collaboration, and academia. Dr. Stansfield, also a committed Christian, brings a wealth of experience in business transformation and the practical application of quality systems and international standards.
A Legacy of Innovation in Quality
Dr. Stansfield’s career began at the forefront of technology, working in Ministry of Defence (MoD) research with the Composite Materials Group at the UK Royal Aerospace Establishment. He later transitioned to the private sector at Lucas Engineering and Systems, where he contributed to a BRITE/EuRAM collaboration focused on developing quality-assured, automated design and manufacturing processes for aerospace composite components.
This hands-on experience provided him with deep insights into Japanese Total Quality Management (TQM) methods before he moved into the realm of large enterprise information systems. His career then took him to the UK Energy Technology Institute—a unique collaboration between the UK government and the energy industry—where he applied advanced Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methods to support the design and development of sustainable renewable energy programmes.
Dr. Stansfield’s contributions to the field have not gone unnoticed. In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Akao Prize, named after the co-developer of QFD, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of Quality Function Deployment.
Since 2010, he has served as the UK representative on the International Standards Development team for the ISO 16355 standard for Modern QFD. He joined the University of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) as a Senior Teaching Fellow, becoming an Associate Professor in 2018 before his partial retirement at the end of 2020. In 2022, he was elected as an associate Academician of the International Academy of Quality, achieving full Academician status in 2025. He currently serves as an active member and co-chair of the Academy’s Voice of the Customer Think Tank (VoCTT).
A Commitment to Quality in Malawi
The seminar aligns perfectly with Emmanuel University’s mission to promote the highest standards of education. In 2025, the university took a significant step forward by appointing its first Director of Quality Assurance. Since then, it has developed a comprehensive Quality Assurance Manual and Systems, currently being implemented to not just meet, but exceed, the minimum standards set by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
